Renal scintigraphy

Diagnostic procedure

You may be asked to drink extra fluid prior to imaging to increase renal function. Water is readily available in our clinic.

One of our doctors will take plenty of time to fully discuss your symptoms, any previously performed tests and treatments, as well as the procedure of the planned examination.

Next, an IV is placed in your arm .If it is difficult for you to drink, hydration can also be accomplished with a hypodermic needle.

To begin the procedure, a trace of a radioactive substance is injected into your arm vein. There has never been any report of an allergic reaction to the substance we use. The radiation exposure is lower than that of a CT scan. The substance is quickly absorbed and excreted by the kidneys. The imaging takes about 30 minutes. About 15 minutes after the beginning of the procedure, a diuretic (Lasix) is injected through the IV in order to accelerate the excretion process. After another 5 minutes, blood will be taken in order to evaluate kidney function.

The scan will be made with you lying down. The next step involves a large camera (the “gamma camera”) under your back or over your abdomen. Your head will not be under the camera. This machine is not a closed tunnel. The camera is open to the sides and makes no noise. Therefore, patients suffering from claustrophobia tolerate the process well. Throughout the examination, one of our medical technicians will assist you and remain within hearing distance. At the end of the examination, one more blood sample will be taken to evaluate kidney function.

The image and the blood sample are analyzed, the images are printed out, and they are given to the consulting doctor.

Your doctor will discuss the results with you during a final consultation. Usually, you will be able to take the medical report and the images with you when you are leaving the clinic.

If your examination is to investigate your high blood pressure, please do not eat before the procedure, but do drink plenty of liquids. Allow at least 3 hours for this examination.
