Parathyroid scintigraphy

Purpose of the examination

A parathyroid scintigraphy creates an image of the parathyroid’s metabolic processes. This makes it possible to locate lumps, which produce an excess of parathyroid hormone (parathyroid adenoma). An excess of parathyroid hormone may lead to osteoporosis. This exam may be indicated for the following issues, among others:

  • Primary hyperparathyroidism (elevated blood levels of parathyroid hormone and calcium)
  • Parathyroid adenoma
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN)
  • Tertiary hyperparathyroidism (e.g. in dialysis patients)

Allow a total of 3 to 4 hours for the examination.
