Thyroid ultrasound and thyroid scintigraphy

Purpose of the examination

Thyroid ultrasound provides information on the size of the gland and on thyroid nodules. A thyroid scan can provide information on nodules within the thyroid gland and can help to determine whether localized areas are overactive or underactive.

thyroid ultrasound may be indicated for issues such as the following:

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis)
  • Enlargement of the thyroid gland (struma)
  • Treatment monitoring, tumor screening

A thyroid scintigraphy may be indicated for issues such as the following:

  • Abnormal blood levels of thyroid hormone, particularly due to hyperthyroidism
  • Assessment of ultrasound-documented thyroid nodule activity
  • Before radioiodine therapy or thyroid surgery

Allow about one hour for the examination.
