Renal scintigraphy

Purpose of the examination

A kidney function scintigraphy is performed to measure urine flow, separately for each kidney. This exam may be indicated for the following issues, among others:

  • Identify and monitor of discharge dysfunction (obstruction) and laterally deviant function, for example urinary blockage (hydronephrosis), and prior to radiation therapy or chemotherapy
  • Identify urinary reflux in the ureter
  • Identify if high blood pressure is due to narrowing of the renal blood vessels.

Allow at least 1½ hours for the examination.
